Hi Joey – It feels so great to have you on Grande Rock! First of all, congrats on “Theories of Flight”. We’ve named it “The Best Album of the Month & of the Year” on Grande Rock! Kudos!
J: Thank you very much.
Do tell us… which are the latest news from the band’s camp?
J: We are about to leave for our first European tour since the release of TOF. And we’re looking forward to it!
So 3 years after “Darkness in a Different Light” you’re back with “Theories of Flight”. What happened in the meantime and how did the band approach the songwriting part this time?
J: Well, Jim spent a lot of that time writing. I went and made a record with Armored Saint during this time too. The only real different approach was Ray recording his vocals at my home studio, normally he records at Jim's studio.
Which are the new/different elements that you introduce with “Theories of Flight”?
J: It’s not a concept record per se, but the themes do revolve around this place we all call home, wherever it may be.
What does “Theories of Flight” declare as a title and how is it related with the cover artwork?
J: Like I said, it’s a comment on flight as in, finding your place.
Do you give us a hint, from your point of view, about each track…
J: “From the Rooftops”: Title track episode...
“Seven Stars”: Written about Rays personal life events...
“SOS”: Do it...
“The Light and Shade of Things”: Self explanatory...
“White Flag”: Personal from Ray...
“Like Stars Our Eyes Have Seen”: Ray like to write about stars...
“The Ghosts of Home”: Personal from Jim...
“Theories of Flight”: Cool...
The album was mixed/mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Symphony X, Haken, etc.) and produced by Jim Matheos. What do you think about the production and did you reach the overall sound you wanted as a band?
J: Yes I love it; I think it’s a great sounding record.
I’ve really enjoyed the play-through video for “White Flag” with you and Bobby. Is there any chance to make another play-through video or any concept or lyric video at some point?
J: Maybe at some point.
You’ve told me that you’re leaving for a tour next week. Where will you travel and for how long? We’re looking forward to seeing you in Greece in February as well.
J: We’ll be in Germany, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Slovakia, Hungary And of course Greece. (i.n.: The interview was done before they started touring.)
Do you think that it’s the melodic side of Fates Warning that have made them so beloved and well-known even to a fan-base that is not into progressive metal music at all?
J: Yes, I suppose so.
What are your expectations from your “Theories of Flight” in general?
J: I try to make it point to not have any expectations these days.
Which are your personal music plans apart from Fates Warning? Any news from the Armored Saint camp?
J: Armored Saint is releasing a live record on Feb 24. We have a short tour of the U.K. in March.

Which is the most underrated musician of all time?
J: Tough one…
Are “social media” a “compulsory part” of music biz these days or bands, artists & labels can do without them as well?

J: Not possible!
Fill in the phrase… “Prog Metal wouldn’t have evolved the way it did, if it hadn’t been for…”
J: I’m not even sure what Prog Metal is anymore.
Which are the best 3 Prog Metal albums of all time according to you?
J: To be honest I don’t know what is considered Prog Metal!
Which do you consider to be the best male & female vocalist in metal history?
J: Can’t do it…
