SURPRISE OF OCTOBER 2006

TO/DIE/FOR
“WOUNDS WIDE OPEN”

(Spinefarm)

As I have written in the band’s previous album (“IV”) review, To/Die/For was ready to go big… and indeed those Finnish guys proved me right! They did it! They released the best album of their carrier to date… ‘cause with those “crazy” Finnish you can never be sure! I was expecting something better than “IV”, but “Wounds Wide Open” is simply the best gothic rock album of 2006 and not only!

The band has evolved in every part… first of all, the songs (and I mean all the songs of this albums) are fantastic with heavy rockin’ guitars (yes, this album rocks more than the previous ones), nice keyboard melodies/atmospheres and excellent catchy hooklines. The production is crystal clear and heavy as it should be for every gothic rock band. Jape is giving his best performances in this album and the whole band follows… like crazy. This album has it all and it will help the band make the big step. I’m sure that now they have nothing to be jealous of bands like H.I.M. (they just wish that they could play like TDF) and Charon. After all, To/Die/For is the best gothic band in the genre and that’s thankfully, not only my opinion.

Every song here will “speak” in your soul… I do not feel that I must discuss each song separately ‘cause when you push “play” you will be transfered into a dark melancholic dimension and your only escape is to listen to Jape’s words… if you're afraid of darkness please do not step in… I cannot assure you for the salvation of your soul… the place down here is shadowy, icy and melancholy is the feeling that you get as long as you step in. By the way their cover to Ozzy’s “(I Just) Want You” is very good.

Those who love the darkness they just found a good friend for their lonely, moody nights… but be aware… this album will leave your wounds wide open for a very long time… there’s no cure here! Do not even think to miss this fantastic melancholic gothic rock album. Cant’ tell how far this band can go after this incredible release!
