SURPRISE OF MAY 2004

OVER THE EDGE (FEAT. MICKEY THOMAS)
OVER THE EDGE

(Frontiers)

The case here is simple: We got the best AOR/hard rock release of the past couple of months and we are already leading the dance! For those who haven’t studied hard, I should mention that Mickey Thomas has been the voice in the second period of Jefferson Starship, the band, which had huge commercial success in the 80’s especially with the single “Jane”. So his magnificent voice and the presence of guitar riffs through the whole album make the difference here in comparison to other similar releases.

But it’s not only that. The songwritting here is a collaboration of top class musicians of the genre! So we get ten songs co-written by Jack Blades (Aerosmith, Cher, Damn Yankees, Ozzy), Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain (Journey), Freddy Curci (Alias), Steven Cristol (Jefferson Starship). Not bad huh? And I should also write that Neal Schon, Steve Lukather (Toto) and Richie Kotzen (Mr. Big) appear on the guitar in some songs. So in a away such a glorious return of Thomas on the rock scene is a surprise, especially after many-many years without presenting an album of his own.

So don’t try to define the musical ID of this project. High class AOR, “sunny” compositions suitable for summer drives in the convertible (which we unfortunately don’t have) with the blonde bimbo on your side! Friends of the genre shouldn’t hesitate at all when they find this CD on the shelf. Ah, not to forget to mention that some AC/DC influences on the guitar riffing appear from time to time here. The ballads are great for dancing under the moonlight and the songs vary significantly among them. What else should I write? This is your AOR album for the month!
