WOTAN
“CARMINA BARBARICA”
(Eat Metal Records)
Wotan
is without doubt an epic metal band, which has a long history but only now
managed to release its first full-length album. Wotan is another name for
the Viking God Odin and “Carmina Barbarica” means “Barbaric Songs”,
something that makes clear what is the band’s favourite style of music…
Lets go back in the year 1988, which was the very first beginning of the
band. In 1991 they released their first demo and in 2000 they released
their second one. In 2002 they gave two live shows in Greece and signed to
the Greek label Eat Metal Records. Their debut album “Carmina Barbarica”
contains twelve tracks; five of them are new versions of previously
released tracks and the rest are new songs. The band’s influences are
coming from the old days of Manowar, but you can also find some influences
from Virgin Steel, Blind Guardian and Running Wild. The vocalist (Vanni)
has a great epic voice, which sometimes approaches the great vocal range
of Eric Adams! The guitars (Mario) keep the epic feeling high together
with the excellent rhythm section (Lorenzo-drums and Salvatore-bass).
Vanni writes the great battle lyrics and the music is composed by Mario.
Some extra information for this album is that in the song “Hussard De La
Mort” the vocalist of Doomsword does some guest vocals in the refrain
and also the song “Thermopiles” includes a narration by Greg Varsamis
in ancient Greek taken from the Herodotus History! The album was recorded
in the Conquest Studio, which belongs to Doomsword, and the production is
good but sounds a little bit old-fashioned… Twelve anthems of war that
will make you think better about the epic metal music and of course Wotan,
which seem to be the rulers of this specific music nowadays! Battles, fear,
tears, glory, steel, blood are included in this CD! Listen to it!
