SURPRISE OF DECEMBER 2005

BRUCE TURGON
“OUTSIDE LOOKING IN”

(Frontiers)

This album will be loved by those who like Shadow King project back in 1991. Bruce was part of that band back in the early 90s (and he also played the bass on Foreigner’s “Mr. Moonlight”) and although “Shadow King” is considered by many as a classic melodic rock album we never heard from Bruce for many years. Now after all this time period Bruce finally releases his debut solo album which has many similarities with “Shadow King” on the style but it is a little more “modern” and not dated as many may think. When I say modern I do not mean that it has any modern new rock elements but rather it’s production does not sound like an early 90s production and the whole result is fresh.

Just to inform you, expect Bruce Turgon, who almost plays anything here and sings, there are some guest appearances of: Lou Gramm, Ricky Phillips, Tom Gimbel and Diana Mills on backing vocals, plus guitar solos by Rocket Ritchitte, Scott McKinstry and Ronnie Montrose and of course the drums were played by Denny Carmassi. I cannot see a reason why someone who likes “Shadow King”, will not like “Outside Looking In”. It’s in the same moody vein without having any light-pop-happy rock songs like other releases of the genre. Songs like “Living A Lie”, “Any Other Time”, “Walk Thru Fire”, “Faith”, “These Tears Must Fall”, “On A Wing And A Prayer” and “Where Do We Go From Here” will leave no other choices than love this album and of course play again “Shadow King”. My only objection is that Bruce should not try to sing like Lou Gramm… and if Lou would sing in this album then it would be a masterpiece!

Anyway things are not always the way we want it to be but in truth to be told “Outside Looking In” is a very strong, mature and tasty album that will satisfy most of the melodic rock fans who also like the moody side of rock as well. It surely is one of the best albums of 2005.
