SURPRISE OF DECEMBER 2003

ON THORNS I LAY
“EGOCENTRIC”

(Black Lotus)

The sixth album from the Greek band On Thorns I Lay is finally released. Three years have past since their last release, “Angeldust”, which was a refreshing album for the band and the first for their new label Black Lotus. Their new CD is the physical sequence of their previous album. The main change to their sound is that Stefanos, the bassist player, has stopped singing and Minas, the second guitarist of the band, is now responsible for the vocals, which are clear and not brutal. Minas has a wonderful voice, which is very strong and melancholic. That was probably the best move for the band. Also the CD contains some, very few, brutal and female vocals and only when they are essential. Their sound is difficult to be described and I think that the mixture of Katatonia, Anathema and maybe Opeth, adding their personal sound, describes their music best. The guitar work that Chris and Minas have done in this album is excellent! I think that since now only Katatonia could create such depressive sounds with the electric guitars, but now these guys, who are fans of Katatonia, can also create great emotional atmosphere. The lyrics are pessimistic and are related to one person, so the album is a concept one and that’s why they have titled it “Egocentric”… The production couldn’t have been better and that is ought to the famous producer Fredrik Nordstrom and the Swedish studios Fredman (Dimmu Borgir, In Flames and other groups have recorded there). The best tracks are: “Life Can” (which is a wonderful track with a catchy refrain that can become the group’s hit), “Poster On A Wall”, “Rampant Of K-ism”, “Quotation For Listening”, “Unsung Songs” and “Gallant Nights”. Finally the artwork is very nice and includes all the shades of grey and black, in order to warn you about what you are going to listen to. This album isn’t an easy listening one and it is not appropriate for every hour of the day, but when the moment is right you will be transferred to a world where the emotions rule! Appropriate for the fans of Katatonia, Anathema, Opeth and generally for those who love the intelligent atmospheric music.
