STEPHEN SHAW

Stephen is a man who has worked very hard in his life and has achieved many good things. The opportunity of doing an interview with such a musician and in general man of the music industry was great for me. In this point I have to say a big thx to Joe Dolan for helping me once again in order to do this interview. Read below what Stephen Shaw told to Grande Rock...

Hi Stephen… it’s really an honor talking to you. I’m considering you as one of the greatest persons that are being involving in the music industry.

S: Thank you for the compliment!

Have you read my review on Grande Rock? What do you think of it?

S: It kicks ass!

Who had the idea to release “Good Times”? Does it contains older songs of yours or and some new ones as well?

S: It was a bunch of demo songs I recorded with some very talented friends. It's somewhat eclectic and was a blast to record. I did that in 1995. Joe Dolan at Retrospect Records heard it and wanted to release it. God bless him for that because no one would have heard it.

Are you happy by releasing your first solo album, if I’m not wrong?

S: It is not really a solo album, it is a collection of songs I recorded with my talented friends.

Is it a chance to go on recording songs that will be released in a future solo album?

S: I don't play music anymore, I am a tour manager and a sound engineer.

Which are those “Good Times” as the title of the album says?

S: It’s just a name of one of the songs

Which are your favorite songs of the album?

S: My favorite song is “I’ll Be Alright” a song about the passing of Glen's (bass player) father. It’s a wonderful song and a great story. I also like I’ll be alright-Good Times-Edge-What’s done is done-Don't wait-Fly Away.

Do you already have plans for a next album?

S: I don't play music anymore.

Let’s talk about the your past… Back in the mid-80’s you were member of an excellent band, which was called Rock Candy… Do you think that the timing back then was not right for Rock Candy to go big?

S: The market was flooded with bands like Rock Candy.

Is it a chance to re-release the album of Rock Candy?

S: Hmmm... we will see, I hope so.

Then after Rockcandy split up you joined your brother David in Bittersweet… Do you believe that Bittersweet had the potentials to take a leading part in the music scene of that time… even were more ready than Rock Candy?

S: Bittersweet was a good band, I was burnt out though.

Before some time Retrospect Records released a double album, which contains all the songs of Bittersweet… do you believe that this should had happened earlier or now it’s the right time for people to get know of Bittersweet?

S: I just hope it makes people happy.

I must also tell you that I like very much the Bittersweet CD … it reminds the golden late 80’s early 90’s era of glam rock and in general of american hard rock where songs were too melodic and pure.

S: Thanks!

Is it a chance for Rock Candy or Bittersweet to re-unite, as many bands are doing nowadays? For example Casanova re-united before some time and they are recording a new album!

S: That will never happen.... we are all doing things in life that make us happy.

Do you prefer to continue working as tour manager though…

S: I love my job.

Is it better to play on the stage or preparing the stage for someone else to play?

S: I did love playing, and now I love what I do.

How did you decided to become a tour manager…?

S: I just fell into it.

I say that money are good enough but you have too many responsibilities on your mind… and you cannot find some time to play rock music!

S: I enjoy doing normal things with my wife when I am off tour. Fishing and working in the yard.

How is music industry from inside?

S: It has it’s good days and bad days.

Is it rotten as many are saying?

S: It’s all I know.

Well I ask you that cause back in 1987 with Rockcandy you had no idea how the music industry works… and maybe you were accusing them form many things and now you are a part of that music industry…

S: That’s funny, it was a hoot though.

Which are the music kinds that the big labels are promoting most this time?

S: The band I am working for now-Drowning Pool.

Do you believe that hard rock music it’s on its rise again?

S: It seems that way.

Can you see a new hard rock band that can become the leader of the scene nowadays?

S: I hope Drowning Pool.

Do you believe that is so easy for a band to differ in today’s music industry than in the past? And if yes what shall it do in order to achieve it?

S: The players in the 80’s were better musicians.

Have you listened to a very good album lately that surprised you?

S: Sorry but... no.

Joe from Retrospect Records is fighting for the hard rock music… and it’s a bless that people like him have a Label that can support our beloved music…

S: Joe Dolan is a saint. God bless Joe D.

Do you think that Joe’s try will shake the hard rock ground and of course the big rock Labels in order to go on for the hard rock music?

S: Joe is putting out music that inspired him and thousands of other people.

Personally I hope it… Good melodies, hard rhythms and funny lyrics are all that are missing from the music industry today… they feed us too much with their shit called music… What do you think of that?

S: I agree.

And a couple of general questions… What was the first tune you ever learned on guitar?

S: “Smoke On The Water”.

Who are the top 5 guitar-players of all time according to you?

S: Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch, Niel Schon, Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhodes.

And some Weird Questions now, to relax somehow!!!… If you were living in Middle Earth which character would you choose to be and why?

S: The King of Rohan… the tour manager.

Do you consider yourself as a rock star?

S: No, not at all.... never did.

What are the biggest life lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?

S: So many I can’t count.

How do you imagine that the music world could be, one thousand years from now? And why?

S: A bigger disaster… hahahahahahahaha...

Imagine that your wife is selling your whole album-collection just to buy for herself an expensive ring. How would you react?

S: I would laugh my ass off... then kill her... just kidding…

Ok Stephen those were my questions. Thx for taking the time to answer them. I wish you the best for you carrier. If there is anything else that you would like to tell to Grande Rock readers, just do it!!

S: Fuck it... have a good time, all the time!!!!!!!
