The Sky is a new band that was formed by the well-known rock vocalist/songwriter Robert Fleischman (Journey/Vinnie Vincent Invasion). Robert is a musician/vocalist that had the chance to be the singer of Journey (only for some months - thankfully the great Steve Perry came on board later – I totally believe that Robert didn’t fit with the band’s new musical direction - not that he is not talented or what) in the late 70s although he had co-written some songs with the band, among them the superb “Wheel In The Sky”… he didn’t have the chance to release anything with them except for the song “For You” that’s featuring on the box set “Time 3”. He was also the singer on Vinnie Vincent Invasion’s debut album. Those were the best moments of Robert’s career… that made him known in the rock scene. Since then, he has played with several bands and has released solo albums but nothing really fancy. Lately in 2009 he formed his new band The Sky… and after almost 2 years he presents the band’s debut album.
Although some may think that Robert can still produce some melodic rock or AOR music… this is absolutely wrong judging by “The Sky”… ‘cause here, he’s playing along a mix of alternative 90s with some rock & roll and many indie rock & brit-pop/rock influences with his band. The result is kind of weird… not bad but neither good. Unfortunately, I didn’t expect something like this from Robert (neither did many others) and I can’t say that I enjoyed it at all. The album is ok, it inhales a live indie/pop/rock feeling – maybe they have recorded it live at studio… but then, I do not find any other positive things. It lacks songwriting and sounds like an alternative bastard of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Those who like Journey or Vinnie Vincent Invasion or even the most melodic rock woks of Robert will be disappointed by this album. Maybe those who like light pop/rock & alternative music and bands like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones will then find this album more interesting than I did. Certainly, this is not my cup of tea… neither an album that will rock (my) your world.
