Glad to see Richard Marx with a new album and under a new label, although there’s a catch here with “Inside My Head”. This is possibly most of a compilation rather than an album that contains totally new & fresh tunes. Most of the songs from the first CD (as the album is available like a double CD - the second one’s featuring re-recorded hits of Marx past releases) are taken from the albums “Emotional Remains”, “Sundown”, “Duo” and “Stories to Tell” that were firstly available through Richard Marx’s official website.
“Emotional Remains” & “Sundown” were both released in 2008 and contained new songs that Richard and some good friends of his had written… at first, only as digital releases and then as physical CDs. The songs: “Part of Me”, “Through My Veins” (amazingly touchy song - could easily be among his top ones), “Over My Head”, “Come Running” & “Done to Me” were taken from “Emotional Remains”, the song “Loved” from “Sundown”, the song “Always On Your Mind” from “Duo” (also appeared on “Sundown” later), which is an acoustic album by Richard Marx and Matt Scannell (Vertical Horizon) & finally, the songs “Had Enough” and “On The Inside” were taken by European Edition of the acoustic album “Stories To Tell” (2010) where they were listed as bonus tracks. The rest 4 songs, “Wouldn’t Let Me Love You” (great tune - potential new hit), “Like Heaven” (beautiful emotional ballad – right what Richard is all about), “All Over Me” (not good at all – too modern for Richard – he’s not in Daughtry or Nickelback) & “Scars” (not his style whatsoever) are the brand new tracks of this release.
As for the second CD which has all his hits along with some other very recognizable songs from his first and most successful releases back in the late 80s/early 90s… honestly, I wouldn’t take ‘em over the original ones not for a day… without meaning that they’re not good or something. I just prefer the original songs better.
If you didn’t have the chance to get “Emotional Remains” & “Sundown” CDs… or if you have lost Richard’s steps (even if he has always been around) then “Inside My Head” is a good way to recover all the wasted time and listen to some new, actually good sensitive tunes. After all, Richard is responsible for some of the most wonderful love songs of all time… that made us cry, feel chills, fall in love or go through a breakup back in the day. It’s great to see him in such a good shape… let’s hope he’ll offer us some great new balladsque material again in the future…
