It’s been almost six years since the band’s last studio album. It’s good to see the band alive and kickin’ after all these years. Praying Mantis is a band that delivers quality and this has always been the case. If you check out the band’s back-catalogue, you will discover great songs and melodies in each one of the albums…
“Sanctuary” is no exception! It is great to see that the guys have such great passion in delivering melodic rock tunes after all these years. Once again, though, the band has a new singer, Mike Freeland (ex-More and Brian Connolly’s Sweet) who is a great voice and fits the band’s music style best, so let’s hope that he will stay longer than the rest. “Sanctuary” will grab your attention from the very first listen… catchy melodies, nice harmonic guitar solos, a great voice and an excellent orchestration… it’s hard not to love this album… which combines elements from “Forever in Time”, “Nowhere to Hide”, “The Journey Goes On” and in general from the band’s 90s era …
This is, according to me, one of the band’s top 3 albums… so melodic yet heavy with fantastic hooklines. It also contains one of the best songs of the year… “Turn the Tide/Lonely Way Home” which has been released as a video clip too. The whole album is simply stunning, every tune is excellent here… but “Tears in the Rain”, “Touch the Rainbow” and “Playing God” are among the best songs in 2009.
The production is very tight and crystal clear… in general, “Sanctuary” is a superb album that is highly recommended to all the melodic rock fans! Praying Mantis deserve more popularity than any other band ‘cause they have been underrated for so many years without ever giving up delivering great music… I believe that this album will offer them the chance they always deserved… Who am I to be playing God… so let us fix this injustice now…
