After big exposure… two video clips… and lots of advertising… it’s time to see what this band is really up to. Huntress are coming from California and play traditional heavy metal music with power, NWOBHM and thrash metal features. They are fronted by the pretty blonde Jill Janus who makes the band’s image sexier. This is not the first time that we hear a lady fronting a heavy metal band and… in any case, ladies have always been into metal music… even on the extreme genres… but nowadays there are far too many. I wasn’t happy by the two videos… although they were visually good… they were too musically bland for my taste with nothing original to offer. Certainly, I waited to listen to the whole album to draw my conclusions... but the first samples weren’t that good… and as it appeared to be... the whole album is below average.
Unluckily, this album is full of banal heavy metal songs… with a powerful but kinda raw production. Nothing original… and especially, nothing exciting at all. Jill’s vocals are also annoying at times, mainly when she hits high notes, and it’s obvious that has more sex appeal than music talent. The whole atmosphere of their videos reminded me a bit of Withcfinder General… with the evil rites, the pagan-style scenery etc. This is another example of how uninspired, dull & unoriginal music can plea the fans… when it gets too much exposure. Like the other female-fronted heavy metal act, Battle Beast, which is sorta bland too… there were great expectations for Huntress but they didn’t quite meet them. I don’t see a reason why someone would prefer this album over some very good heavy metal ones that are out right now… but they weren’t advertised that much. As history has shown… most of the critically promoted bands… have failed us in the end…
