KAIPA
“KEYHOLDER”

(Inside Out)

I think that Kaipa should become the example of substantial reunion! For those who don't know it, the band started back at the 70's (!!!) and released five albums of prog rock until 1982 when it was disbanded. Last year (after twenty full years of absence) the band returned with the very good album "Notes From The Past". But this year Kaipa seems to be determined to drive us all nuts! Because its new album is a more than valuable contribution to prog rock for the new millennium. And that is because the music of the new CD is the perfect mixture of progressive, rock, folk, symphonic, classical, lyrical music with some oriental touch! Ronnie Stolt (guitars) and Hans Lundin (keyboards) have opened their soul to create music with sense, sentiment and passion. Ah not to forget to mention Aleena's backing (and sometimes lead) vocals that add an even more impressive tone to the whole context. No joking now, you could listen to the magnificent "The Wheel Of Mankind" and understand what I'm talking about. Long songs, but so well structured and with so many variations that don't become boring (at least I look forward to the evolvement of each song). For me this CD might be the surprise of the year. Prog fans don't imagine missing this one. As for the others, you will definitely appreciate an album with so qualitative music no matter what. It's lacking these days.

KALMAH
"THEY WILL RETURN"

Finland’s attack!!! Kalmah is another top band from Finland and their new album is really a masterpiece! They play thrash/death melodic metal with many black metal elements. In this point I have to refer that the guitarist of the band is Antti Kokko ( the quitarist Of Eternal Tears Of Sorrow) and the singer and also the other guitarist is Pecca Kokko, Antti’s older brother. I knew Antti from EtoS and when I noticed him in the line up of the band, I expected to listen to a very interesting album. And I was right. An extremely good heavy aggressive record, with great songs, unforgettable melodies and with an impressive production! I cannot tell which song is better than the other but honestly you will love every song of this incredible album. I consider this band as one of the great hopes for the future of extreme metal music. Everyone should listen to this unique album and to revise his opinion about groups not yet very known but with great music quality! One of the best releases for 2002!

KAMELOT
"EPICA"

This is one really hard-working group. I've been following them since their second album (Dominion), back in 1996 when Kamelot was just a promising group with a great CD. Since then every effort is one step forward. I think the magic move was when they hired x-Conception singer Roy Khan. Since then Youngblood and Kahn evolved to an inseparable composing duet, producing better and better as time evolved. The result is this new astonishing CD "Epica", which is a concept album based on Faust's story. Some of the more mature songs of the group are here. Their music remains this amalgam of American power metal, with many European elements and some folk scales, which became so representative of the group. The amazing melodies, power and atmosphere will definitely carry you away. Excellent work on the guitars, plus I like the discrete presence of the piano in almost every song, which adds a valuable depth to the songs. In addition Luca Turilli and Ian Parry appear in a couple of songs. I believe this must be one of the best power metal albums of 2003.

KARCIUS
“KALEIDOSCOPE”

(Unicorn Digital)

That band really surprised me as I didn’t expect to listen to such kind of music. Maybe I wasn’t totally prepared but I must say that in the end I liked and I enjoyed what I heard. I may not be a prog-freak as I have said far too many times in the past, but I absolutely respect and like to listen to many kinds of music apart from metal and rock. The instrumentalist quartet from Montreal gave me that chance and that’s the reason why I like this release very much. This CD is instrumental, as you have figured out, and it’s not by any means a heavy-prog album. Karcius mixed together many music styles such as jazz, fusion, prog-rock, latin, classical, symphonic music and they managed to create a very interesting music amalgam that will surprise you. If you believe that instrumental music can be boring (I think the same too for the most of the instrumental bands that I have heard) then Karcius will make you love instrumental well-arranged and very clever orchestrated music. I’m sure that fans of Liquid Tension Experiment Planet X, and Spaced Out will like them. The same goes for the jazz-fusion fans ‘cause if they try them out, they will be nicely surprised as well.

KAOS MOON
“THE CIRCLE OF MADNESS”

(Unicorn Records)

Kaos Moon was formed back in the middle 80’s. After some line up changes they split up in 1987… and they reunited in 1993 and they also released its first album “After The Storm”. Since then the mastermind of the band Bard Ouellette due to his hard work in his studio Amadeus put the band on ice till 1992 where he meets with Unicorn Records’ Michel St-Pere, at a Hamadryad/Visible Wind concert in Montreal and they decided to release a new Kaos Moon album. So, the new album of the band is a fact after 11 years! Back in 1993 the band was compared to Saga and Queensryche but nowadays seems that they have changed their music style since then. Their music can be characterized as prog rock ala Marillion and I really can’t think of any other band that has influenced them so much. The production of the album is also excellent. To sum it up, here we have 8 cool prog rock songs with hammond, synth, violin and nice guitar solos that will satisfy the fans of 80’s 90’s prog rock music and of course Marillon’s fans.

KATAGORY V
“A NEW BREED OF REBELLION”

(Metal Ages)

This is the second album of Katagory V and this one is released under the Metal Ages Records (their debut album was self-released…). The band’s music is based on the American power and progressive metal sound and so, bands like Fates Warning and Queensryche will straight come into your mind. The highlights of the album are the very good ideas, the progressiveness, and the wonderful vocals of Lynn Allers, which have something of the special feeling of Ray Alder’s vocals! The guitarists (Trevor Asire and Curtis Morrell) are very good and reminded me the early guitar work of Fates Warning and Queensryche. The band seems to be talented, because the tracks are very good and I think that people and labels should pay more attention to these guys from Utah. On the other hand, the album has a bad production and this is due to the low budget they got from their label, as I can guess… The drums (Matt Suiter) sound awful, and this sometimes is disturbing and twists the final result! Listen to this album, if you can stand the bad production, which surely “forced” me to put a lower grade...

KATAKLYSM
“SERENITY IN FIRE”

(Nuclear blast)

Let’s start this review with a simple quiz. Take a quick look at the CD-cover of the new album of Kataklysm. Ok? Now tell me, judging by your own, what kind of music are you prepared to listen to? You have three options: a) Classic rock, b) Pop, c) Brutal death metal. Come on its so obvious… ok time’s up. I’m sure you all have chosen “c” and you’re absolutely right. Kataklysm’s 7th album does exactly what its title says: Puts fire in any serenity, calmness, melody, softness and harmony. The Canadian band is completely unfamiliar with the words mentioned above. Their sound is so heavy, vicious and repulsive exactly like the huge skull on the cover. The drums in most of the tracks sound like a machine-gun, the vocals are full of abhorrence and rage and the guitar playing it’s like bleeding. Considering the fact that some of you enjoy these features, I could recommend this album only to the extreme death metal funs. The others could just listen to the tracks: “The Ambassador Of Pain” and “Serenity Of fire” which are the only ones with good rhythm and thunderous riffs. Finally I just mention the main idea of Kataklysm’s album as it can be heard from the very beginning of the CD: “… none of us will see heaven”. Ok guys after this album I doubt if heaven wants to see you… but who cares anyway.

KATATONIA
"VIVA EMPTINESS"

Swedish Katatonia returned to the metal music scene with their sixth album entitled "Viva Emptiness". The difference between their previous album "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and "Viva Emptiness' is that the last one is heavier, a little bit harder and in my opinion more emotional and definitely darker! But it is a "difficult" album and someone must listen to it many times to understand it. There are a few songs like "Ghost Of The Sun", "Criminals" and "Sleeper" that are catchier than the others and that are going to stick in your mind after the very first listening of the album. The magic of the album is that the rest of the songs need more listenings and if you spend some time to them, you will "discover" some other shinning bright diamonds of Katatonia! Songs such as "A Premonition", "Wealth", "Walking By A Wire", "Evidence" and "Omerta" will please not only the fans of the band, but all those who like good melodic melancholic, gloomy and emotional metal music! Have I confused you? If yes, stop reading this review, just go out and buy this remarkable album! The more things you read the more you will be confused. Things here are so simple. We're talking about dark depressing mysterious music that will touch you deepest feelings! And you will continue to whisper…. Viva Emptiness…I've been longing for you!

KEE MARCELLO’S K2
“MELON DEMON DIVINE”

(Frontiers)

Kee Marcello is known by his work on bands like Easy Action, Europe, and Red Fun. “Mellon Demon Divine” is K2’s debut album where he plays the guitar, the keys and also sings. The bassist of the band is Klaatu and the drummer the well-known Showy Shaw. Up to here everything seems to work just fine. But honestly what music path do you believe that Kee would follow? Well, forget any answers that come first on your mind. Things are very simple here. Kee plays rock music with hard rock elements but with a modern edge and many new rock influences. Did I frighten you? To tell you the truth I was expecting something more traditional from Kee but it seems that he had something else on his mind. But do not worry cause the album is well produced (the production made by Kee himself) and has many melodic parts from song to song. His voice isn’t the best voice in the world, but it is appropriate for the music style of the band. Some songs that I like for this album are: “E.M.D.”, “Enemies”, “Blood”, “Epic” (which has a terrific emotional solo in the middle of the song), “Hey Romeo” (which has a keyboard melody ala “Superstitious” in the chorus), “Comin’ Home”, and “Ride On”. This album is only for Kee’s die hard fans, which also like modern elements in rock music. As for others, better listen to it before you get it.

KHYMERA
"KHYMERA"

If I'm not wrong, then Khymera have taken their name from the well-known and scary monster that is being described in the Hellenic Mythology and it was called Chimera. I really cannot see any connection between the name and the music of the band, but my "work" here is to make a review of this album and not to say my "theories"! So, the main persons behind Khymera are the famous singer Steve Walsh (Kansas, Streets) and the Italian guitarist Daniele Liverani ("Genius" Rock Opera). Therefore those two men decided to release an album-compilation of Melodic Rock songs that well-known songwriters of the genre, have composed them. Some of them are the legendary Russ Ballard, Jim Peterik, Neal Schon and Giorgio Morode. A few of those songs have been released from other bands and in fact the most of them never released under the name of any band or of the composers. That's the reason, I believe, that this album was being released. But anyway the truth is that "Khymera" has some actually good melodic rock songs like the hard rocker "Strike By Lightning", which was written by Giorgio Moroder and originally performed by Mr. Big for the "Navy Seals" soundtrack, the same goes for "Shadows" also. Other songs that's worth to be listening from this album are "Who's Gonna Love You Tonight" (which was written by David Foster, "How You Gonna Live Without Love"(written by Bob Held), "Bless A Brand New Angel"(written by Robin and Judithe Randall), "Love Leads The Way" (originally appeared as a bonus track of Harldline's "Double Eclipse" in the Japanese version) and "Tears On the Pages" (written by Jim Peterik/Russ Ballad). So as an overview to those that I said above, "Khymera" is a good melodic rock collection-album, that has different versions of known songs, or even first versions of unreleased ones.

KHOLD
"PHANTOM"

Khold is a Norwegian band, which plays (so hard to imagine that!) black metal. The songs, in general, are mid-tempo (and will remind you Katatonia in their firsts album) with a few fast-tempo breaks, the vocals are so predictable (and the vocal melodies), and finally the production of the album is good (even though I don't like much the dirty-sound in the guitars). So if you try to listen to this album at a single stroke, you will surely get bored very soon. I don't say that this album is totally bad, cause some of you might like it or you might find it different (and it is different from the typical fast Norwegian black metal) than other black metal releases, but personally I think that this is a boring album that's has songs with no personality. The choice is up to you.

KINETIC
“THE CHAINS THAT BIND US”

(Sleaszy Rider)

As many of you may remember, Kinetic is a Greek band that I have reviewed their demo “Kinetic” almost a year ago. Now it is the time for their debut album and I am really glad about them, because they have tried hard and the final result is very good! Just for the story, members that have been previously experienced in other Greek bands formed this band in 2002 in Athens. In the beginning of 2004 the band signed a contract for two albums with the Greek Sleaszy Rider Records. Their debut album balances between technical thrash, death and progressive metal as their demo “Kinetic” did. They have been much influenced from the Swedish death metal scene but Testament, Death and american death metal are the basic influences of the band… Apart from the aggressive part of their music, the thrash and technical solos and riffs, the death/thrash metal vocals and the technical and powerful rhythm section, you will find many melodic parts in this CD, which are very catchy! The album has a very heavy and clean production and this is due to their hard trying, because they spent more than 500 hours in the studio for the recordings and the production! Finally, the album contains a very good video for the track “Never Ending Winter”. Generally, this album is surely one of the best I have listened to this year in the death/thrash metal scene and you ought to listen to it! For more information about the band visit their official website at: www.kinetic-band.gr.

KING CRIMSON
“THE POWER TO BELIEVE”

We have a saying here in Greece, according to which "a confessed sin, ceases being a sin". Well, my sin is that despite being a prog freak, I never seemed to like King Crimson very much (except for the glorious "In the Court Of The Crimson King", which I hail). No specific reason for that, just a fact. Well, it seems that this latest album of the band will twist my mind around... I will definitely start re-examining their music. Listening to the album resulted to an examination of the inner self - a journey to the mind, something that happens only when music is created by noble inspiration. The album consists of 11 songs of technocratic, lyrical, prog rock that sometimes becomes so heavy that reaches metal's boundaries. Of course the music has an intense psychedelic approach, presenting a Robert Fripp to his top level of composing! No, I cannot distinguish some songs out of the album, as it would be as if taking a way a piece from a magnificent puzzle. The amazing here is that K.C. are progressive in the real meaning of the term, they don't present something old - which can be called "progressive" only because of the way of playing. Of course this means that the album is addressed to open-minded listeners. Be careful: it is not music for musicians, but for those who have the ability to give time to a record until it matures inside them. Tool's fans, "bite" this one in order to find one of the roots of your favourite band.

KING DIAMOND
“THE PUPPET MASTER”

(Massacre)

The new album from the master of horror, King Diamond, is released. After the indifferent “Abigail II: The Revenge” album, most of King’s fans expected from him something really good. If you have listened to some of the albums that King has released in the past (especially albums like “Them”, “Conspiracy”, “Abigail” and others), you know more or less what to expect from him. Taking this for granted, I expected something good, as he is has never released a bad album, and I was looking forward to read the lyrics, in order to understand the story that this time King had on his mind. To my surprise, after many listenings, I found out that this new album is more theatrical than everything else, King has released, and also some new elements are added in his music! The differences with all his previous albums are that he, for the first time, uses his trademark higher vocals less that he used to. Also, a female singer, named Livia Zita, has taken on some of the female vocals in this album and I must admit that she is doing her job very well and gives the album a different and spookier atmosphere. Now lets take a look to the story that is included in this CD and is exclusively written by King, as always. It is about a mad puppet master in Budapest, who is making puppets of real bodies with the help of his wife, Emerencia, and gives successful performances. The leading character (King), involves in strange, dangerous and spooky situations in order to help the woman he loves (who is also a victim of the puppet master). The end is really tragic and the entire story mainly refers to love, but for more details you must read the lyrics… Let’s go now to the music part of the album. For once again, King Diamond composed most of the songs himself; some others were composed with the help of the guitarist Andy La Rocque and in one track, Matt Thompson (drummer), contributed too. This album has great riffs, extremely good and melodic solos and some vocal lines that stuck in your head from the first listening! The rest musicians that took part in the recordings are Mike Wead (guitars) and Hall Patino (drums) who have really made a good work. If I were about to choose some tracks from this great album I would choose: “The Puppet Master”, “Magic”(for its riff), “The Ritual” (for its great chorus), “Darkness” and “Living Dead”. Another interesting is that the album includes a bonus DVD with the story of the album told by King Diamond (the promo I have in my hands doesn’t include it, so I cannot say more about it…). “The Puppet Master” is one of the best albums that King has released so far. Don’t leave the chance to feel and listen to such an interesting album!

KING DIAMOND
"ABIGAIL II - THE REVENGE"

"Abigail II The Revenge", continues from where the first "Abigail" almost 15 years ago has stopped. So King here offers us another interesting and dark story which it's dressed with excellent music background. Of course musicians like Andy Larocque , Mike Wead and Hal Patino are guarantee!!! King once again managed to make a brilliant album not only in the music part but also as far as it concerns to the concept theme. I cannot tell if this album is better than the first "Abigail", but I can definitely tell that "Abigail II The Revenge", is one of the best albums that King has ever made.

KIUAS
“THE SPIRIT OF UKKO”

(Spinefarm)

Kiuas is new band that was formed in 2000 in Finland. This is the debut album for the band, although that it has also released two EP’s and a MCD under a different label last year. The band plays a mixture of melodic death/black metal with power metal, but there are also some thrash, epic and pagan influences... It’s something like a mixture of Brainstorm and Soilwork to me. The eight tracks of the alum have some clean vocals and some aggressive vocals, but not brutal... The guitars are heavy, powerful and fast and if you like melodic and aggressive music there is no way that you won’t like them! The album has many fast and melodic solos that really fit their music. The rhythm section sounds technical, fast and powerful too. Finally, the keyboards add a variety and many melodic parts to this album. The production is powerful enough, but it could have been a little bit better and cleaner at some parts. Generally, this is a very interesting album and if we consider that this is the debut album for the band, I think we can expect great things from these guys in the near future! The best tracks are: “The Spirit Of Ukko”, “Warrior Soul”, “Until We Reach The Shore” and “And The North Star Cried”.

KNIGHT AREA
“THE SUN ALSO RISES”

(The Laser’s Edge)

Knight Area is the solo project of Gerben Klazinga (Sangamo and Jukebox Night are his musical projects) coming from The Netherlands. Gerben’s brother, named Joop, influenced him since they were kids, because Joop was listening to bands like Camel, King Crimson, Barclay James Harvest and others. So, Gerben decided to focus mainly on the classical piano and less on drums and Joop on the flute. The two brothers created the concept “The Sun Also Rises”, in 1982 and in the year 2000 up to 2003 Gerben composed all the music. Their music can be characterized as progressive rock with influences of symphonic rock and metal music. The musicians that have also taken part in the recordings apart from the two brothers are coming from the Dutch progressive rock scene: Mark Smit and Stephanie Lagrande on vocals, Peter van Heijningen, Jeroen Hogenboom and Arjan Groenendijk on guitars, Gijs Koopman and Ron Van Der Bas on bass and others on acoustic guitars, accordion, hammond etc… In this album you can find real and original music that it addresses only to people who love progressive rock in the style of Camel, Pink Floyd, Marillion, IQ, Genesis etc. You will be astonished by the composing skills of the two brothers and you will only want to listen to this album over and over again in order to discover new dimensions every time! The melodies and the arrangements are very clever and really amazing! The vocals are very touching and sometimes become dramatic and add a theatrical feeling to this album. The lyrics are an autobiographical story and concern a boy who is in the search of his identity and are really touching. The album was recorded and produced at Knight Area studios in Holland and has a wonderful sound. The artwork, as you can see is just great. Fans of progressive rock buy this album and believe me that you will be very proud by having it in you CD collection!

KOB
“STRAFE THE UNDERDOGS”

(Anvil Corp)

The band comes from France... which is actually a bad introduction as France historically hasn’t provided any good metal-rock group. Can KOB alter this tradition? Hardly. The band plays true metal with some (US) power influences, which although played in a good way it hasn’t much to say in the year 2004. Setting aside the opening track, which is one of the worst opening tracks I’ve ever heard, the rest of the album moves in a high quality (for the standards of the genre). The band hails everything that Judas Priest has ever released, has some Accept references and gives some glimpses to Manilla Road and Jag Panzer. All of these are presented under a modern prism and a bombastic production that gives much “breathing space” to the tracks. For a release of the genre is really good as the riffs are on fire and the rhythm section solid. However as happens with all bands of the kind, we think that we have heard everything in the past. No, I’m not arguing that traditional heavy metal is obsolete... listen for example groups like Evergrey, Herod, etc. and you will se the difference. If you are a fan of the sound, then I would definitely suggest this CD. If not, forget about it. For me it is a...

KOPECKY
“BLOOD”

(Unicorn Digital)

Another prog release that I have to take care of… as our prog-freak Alex is kind of busy this time period so please excuse me if I do not say some things the way they are… or if I make some mistakes. Kopecky is an American trio that plays instrumental prog heavy rock music. The guys in the band are all related, they are brothers and that seems to work well for them especially on the musical part. The band is mostly famed for its great technical skills and this is more than obvious by listening to this album. The good thing is that they have put some other metal influences here (like Doom elements) in some songs in order to make the whole result more interesting. I’m sure that those who liked the previous works of the band will like the new one as well.

KOROVAKILL
“WATERHELLS”

(Red Stream)

This CD was released in 2001 but only now came into my hands... The previous name of the band was Korova and the band has released two more albums under that name. The band is coming from Austria and sounds really strange... this is not necessarily bad, ‘cause “strange” music interests a lot of people. The band has mixed many music styles and the final result sounds like a progressive/industrial/avant-garde/gothic/horror black metal! The vocals are very theatrical and have a big variety, because here you can find clean and aggressive/brutal male vocals, female ethereal vocals and even some “electronic” vocals. Some tracks contain electronic sounds and others have wonderful keyboards. The guitars are sometimes acoustic and others are influenced from black/death metal bands... The whole atmosphere of the album is hypnotic, dramatic and melancholic! The final result is very good and strange and cannot be categorized under a specific music style! Those who like experimental music will appreciate this work, but I warn you: this in not an easy-listening album! Finally, I must mention that the album is a concept one and it concerns a story of six drown fishermen (influenced by an Austrian legend...). The production is very good and creates deeper feelings! Best tracks: “WaterHells”, “Drown Symphony “, “Into The Underwhirls”, “Blue Thrones” (instrumental) and “It’s A Fool’s World” (hellish track!).

KOTIPELTO
"WAITING FOR THE DAWN"

I always look at side-projects with suspicion, because most of the times they are disappointing. I understand that some musicians want to express themselves in a in a different way, other than what they do with their normal band, but sometimes this results to music "murders". The even stranger thing is when musicians produce a solo album that its music is quite similar to what they do with their band! Well, this is the case with Timo Kotipelto's (Stratovarius' vocalist) CD. But you have my word that despite the loss of originality, this album kicks butts!!! The music is European power metal, but it is fresh, innovative, with quite impressive ideas and less "symphonic" from Stratovarius' material. The songs hit straight to the target, reminding a lot of Helloween's glory days. Two are the most important things here: first that although Timo plays a kind of music that seems to have been satiated, the songs are not borring at all and you enjoy listening to them. Second the album must have been composed in a really good mood, something that is evident in the songs that manage to carry you away with their strength and enthusiasm. I like this album more than Stratovarius' last couple of works to be honest. Congrats Timo.

KROKUS
"ROCK THE BLOCK"

When the webmaster gave me the new Krokus CD for review, I almost jumped out of joy!! Ho-ho, Krokus is back with Storace on vocals - this is going to be fun!! As soon as I put the CD on the CD player and pushed play I thought: "This bastard, the webmaster, tricked me once again. He put AC/DC's "Powerage" in the new Krokus cover, and gave it to me for review!". I pressed the "next" button and I said to myself "Hey, wait a minute, this seems to come from the "Back in Black" album, so this must be an AC/DC compilation"...Then I understood, that this is indeed the new Krokus album, but simultaneously it is the most AC/DC album that Krokus have ever released!! And to be honest it seems to be the best AC/DC album that AC/DC never released in the past few years!!! Oh, yes, this is a very good album, full of hard rock. You know, only a few chords, nice vocal melodies, solid rhythm section, fast solos etc. For those who think that Krokus has nothing more to offer, or that it is just imitation music, I have nothing to say. For those who don't care much about these things and prefer to have a good time by the beach, with qualitative hard rock music which grooves you to the bone, I say "remember me too when you raise your cans"!!!! Cheers!

“BOOK OF THE DEAD”

(ProgRock Records)

This is the debut album of the band, which in essence seems to be more of a side project. The mastermind behind this release is bassist/keyboardist Ken Jaquess (Atlantis), but the participants are really big names: Allan Holdsworth on guitar, Roy Okumoto (Spock’s Beard) on keyboards and Doug Sanborn on the drums! So, we have quite a gathering of talented progsters here. The vocals are handled by Shaun Guerin, who sounds like a mixture of Fish and Peter Gabriel. By the way, I can say that the whole approach here reminds me of Marillion (the early period) and Genesis. Of course I don’t mean that the band does a “copy-paste” work here. On the contrary the prog rock adopted approach here is very fruitful, resulting to interesting compositions. Furthermore, the violin played here by the classical virtuoso Yvette Devereaux adds an impressive depth to the songs and makes the whole attempt worthwhile. By the way Holdsworth ties the guitar into knots at times, giving lessons of how the instrument should be played: with feeling and substance! The album is a concept one, with five chapters/songs. Ancient Egypt and Pharaohs are the contextual inspirations here, although the music doesn’t have much to do with oriental listenings. Very good effort.
