KINETIC
“THE CHAINS THAT BIND US”
(Sleaszy Rider)
As
many of you may remember, Kinetic is a Greek band that I have reviewed
their demo “Kinetic” almost a year ago. Now it is the time for their
debut album and I am really glad about them, because they have tried hard
and the final result is very good! Just for the story, members that have
been previously experienced in other Greek bands formed this band in 2002
in Athens. In the beginning of 2004 the band signed a contract for two
albums with the Greek Sleaszy Rider Records. Their debut album balances
between technical thrash, death and progressive metal as their demo
“Kinetic” did. They have been much influenced from the Swedish death
metal scene but Testament, Death and american death metal are the basic
influences of the band… Apart from the aggressive part of their music,
the thrash and technical solos and riffs, the death/thrash metal vocals
and the technical and powerful rhythm section, you will find many melodic
parts in this CD, which are very catchy! The album has a very heavy and
clean production and this is due to their hard trying, because they spent
more than 500 hours in the studio for the recordings and the production!
Finally, the album contains a very good video for the track “Never
Ending Winter”. Generally, this album is surely one of the best I have
listened to this year in the death/thrash metal scene and you ought to
listen to it! For more information about the band visit their official

KING CRIMSON
“THE POWER TO BELIEVE”
We have a saying here in Greece, according to which "a confessed sin, ceases being a sin". Well, my sin is that despite being a prog freak, I never seemed to like King Crimson very much (except for the glorious "In the Court
Of The Crimson King", which I hail). No specific reason for that, just a fact. Well, it seems that this latest
album of the band will twist my mind around... I will definitely start re-examining their music. Listening to the album resulted to an examination of the inner self - a journey to the mind, something that happens only when music is created by noble inspiration. The album consists of 11 songs of technocratic, lyrical, prog rock that sometimes becomes so heavy that reaches metal's boundaries. Of course the music has an intense psychedelic approach, presenting a Robert Fripp to his top level of composing! No, I cannot distinguish some songs out of the album, as it would be as if taking a way a piece from a magnificent puzzle. The amazing here is that
K.C. are progressive in the real meaning of the term, they don't present something old - which can be called "progressive" only because of the way of playing. Of course this means that the album is addressed to open-minded listeners. Be careful: it is not music for musicians, but for those who have the ability to give time to a record until it matures inside them. Tool's fans, "bite" this one in order to find one of the roots of your favourite
band.

KING DIAMOND
“THE PUPPET MASTER”
(Massacre)
The new album from the master of horror, King Diamond, is released. After the indifferent “Abigail II: The Revenge” album, most of King’s fans expected from him something really good. If you have listened to some of the albums that King has released in the past (especially albums like “Them”, “Conspiracy”, “Abigail” and others), you know more or less what to expect from him. Taking this for granted, I expected something good, as he is has never released a bad album, and I was looking forward to read the lyrics, in order to understand the story that this time King had on his mind. To my surprise, after many listenings, I found out that this new album is more theatrical than everything else, King has released, and also some new elements are added in his music! The differences with all his previous albums are that he, for the first time, uses his trademark higher vocals less that he used to. Also, a female singer, named Livia Zita, has taken on some of the female vocals in this album and I must admit that she is doing her job very well and gives the album a different and spookier atmosphere. Now lets take a look to the story that is included in this CD and is exclusively written by King, as always. It is about a mad puppet master in Budapest, who is making puppets of real bodies with the help of his wife, Emerencia, and gives successful performances. The leading character (King), involves in strange, dangerous and spooky situations in order to help the woman he loves (who is also a victim of the puppet master). The end is really tragic and the entire story mainly refers to love, but for more details you must read the lyrics… Let’s go now to the music part of the album. For once again, King Diamond composed most of the songs himself; some others were composed with the help of the guitarist Andy La Rocque and in one track, Matt Thompson (drummer), contributed too. This album has great riffs, extremely good and melodic solos and some vocal lines that stuck in your head from the first listening! The rest musicians that took part in the recordings are Mike Wead (guitars) and Hall Patino (drums) who have really made a good work. If I were about to choose some tracks from this great album I would choose: “The Puppet Master”, “Magic”(for its riff), “The Ritual” (for its great chorus), “Darkness” and “Living Dead”. Another interesting is that the album includes a bonus DVD with the story of the album told by King Diamond (the promo I have in my hands doesn’t include it, so I cannot say more about it…). “The Puppet Master” is one of the best albums that King has released so far. Don’t leave the chance to feel and listen to such an interesting album!

KING DIAMOND
"ABIGAIL II - THE REVENGE"
"Abigail II The Revenge", continues from where the first "Abigail" almost 15 years ago has stopped. So King here offers us another interesting and dark story which it's dressed with excellent music background. Of course musicians like Andy Larocque , Mike Wead and Hal Patino are guarantee!!! King once again managed to make a brilliant album not only in the music part but also as far as it concerns to the concept theme. I cannot tell if this album is better than the first "Abigail", but I can definitely tell that "Abigail II The Revenge", is one of the best albums that King has ever made.

KIUAS
“THE SPIRIT OF UKKO”
(Spinefarm)
Kiuas is new band that was formed in 2000 in Finland. This is the debut
album for the band, although that it has also released two EP’s and a
MCD under a different label last year. The band plays a mixture of melodic
death/black metal with power metal, but there are also some thrash, epic
and pagan influences... It’s something like a mixture of Brainstorm and
Soilwork to me. The eight tracks of the alum have some clean vocals and
some aggressive vocals, but not brutal... The guitars are heavy, powerful
and fast and if you like melodic and aggressive music there is no way that
you won’t like them! The album has many fast and melodic solos that
really fit their music. The rhythm section sounds technical, fast and
powerful too. Finally, the keyboards add a variety and many melodic parts
to this album. The production is powerful enough, but it could have been a
little bit better and cleaner at some parts. Generally, this is a very
interesting album and if we consider that this is the debut album for the
band, I think we can expect great things from these guys in the near
future! The best tracks are: “The Spirit Of Ukko”, “Warrior Soul”,
“Until We Reach The Shore” and “And The North Star Cried”.

KNIGHT AREA
“THE SUN ALSO RISES”
(The Laser’s Edge)
Knight
Area is the solo project of Gerben Klazinga (Sangamo and Jukebox Night are
his musical projects) coming from The Netherlands. Gerben’s brother,
named Joop, influenced him since they were kids, because Joop was
listening to bands like Camel, King Crimson, Barclay James Harvest and
others. So, Gerben decided to focus mainly on the classical piano and less
on drums and Joop on the flute. The two brothers created the concept
“The Sun Also Rises”, in 1982 and in the year 2000 up to 2003 Gerben
composed all the music. Their music can be characterized as progressive
rock with influences of symphonic rock and metal music. The musicians that
have also taken part in the recordings apart from the two brothers are
coming from the Dutch progressive rock scene: Mark Smit and Stephanie
Lagrande on vocals, Peter van Heijningen, Jeroen Hogenboom and Arjan
Groenendijk on guitars, Gijs Koopman and Ron Van Der Bas on bass and
others on acoustic guitars, accordion, hammond etc… In this album you
can find real and original music that it addresses only to people who love
progressive rock in the style of Camel, Pink Floyd, Marillion, IQ, Genesis
etc. You will be astonished by the composing skills of the two brothers
and you will only want to listen to this album over and over again in
order to discover new dimensions every time! The melodies and the
arrangements are very clever and really amazing! The vocals are very
touching and sometimes become dramatic and add a theatrical feeling to
this album. The lyrics are an autobiographical story and concern a boy who
is in the search of his identity and are really touching. The album was
recorded and produced at Knight Area studios in Holland and has a
wonderful sound. The artwork, as you can see is just great. Fans of
progressive rock buy this album and believe me that you will be very proud
by having it in you CD collection!

KOB
“STRAFE THE UNDERDOGS”
(Anvil Corp)
The band comes from France... which is actually a bad introduction as
France historically hasn’t provided any good metal-rock group. Can KOB
alter this tradition? Hardly. The band plays true metal with some (US)
power influences, which although played in a good way it hasn’t much to
say in the year 2004. Setting aside the opening track, which is one of the
worst opening tracks I’ve ever heard, the rest of the album moves in a
high quality (for the standards of the genre). The band hails everything
that Judas Priest has ever released, has some Accept references and gives
some glimpses to Manilla Road and Jag Panzer. All of these are presented
under a modern prism and a bombastic production that gives much
“breathing space” to the tracks. For a release of the genre is really
good as the riffs are on fire and the rhythm section solid. However as
happens with all bands of the kind, we think that we have heard everything
in the past. No, I’m not arguing that traditional heavy metal is
obsolete... listen for example groups like Evergrey, Herod, etc. and you
will se the difference. If you are a fan of the sound, then I would
definitely suggest this CD. If not, forget about it. For me it is a...

KOPECKY
“BLOOD”
(Unicorn Digital)
Another prog release that I have to take care of… as our prog-freak Alex is kind of busy this time period so please excuse me if I do not say
some things the way they are… or if I make some mistakes. Kopecky is an American trio that plays instrumental prog heavy rock music. The guys in the band are all related, they are brothers and that seems to work well for them especially on the musical part. The band is mostly famed for its great technical skills and this is more than obvious by listening to this album. The good thing is that they have put some other metal influences here (like Doom elements) in some songs in order to make the whole result more interesting. I’m sure that those who liked the previous works of the band will like the new one as well.

KOROVAKILL
“WATERHELLS”
(Red Stream)
This
CD was released in 2001 but only now came into my hands... The previous
name of the band was Korova and the band has released two more albums
under that name. The band is coming from Austria and sounds really
strange... this is not necessarily bad, ‘cause “strange” music
interests a lot of people. The band has mixed many music styles and the
final result sounds like a
progressive/industrial/avant-garde/gothic/horror black metal! The vocals
are very theatrical and have a big variety, because here you can find
clean and aggressive/brutal male vocals, female ethereal vocals and even
some “electronic” vocals. Some tracks contain electronic sounds and
others have wonderful keyboards. The guitars are sometimes acoustic and
others are influenced from black/death metal bands... The whole atmosphere
of the album is hypnotic, dramatic and melancholic! The final result is
very good and strange and cannot be categorized under a specific music
style! Those who like experimental music will appreciate this work, but I
warn you: this in not an easy-listening album! Finally, I must mention
that the album is a concept one and it concerns a story of six drown
fishermen (influenced by an Austrian legend...). The production is very
good and creates deeper feelings! Best tracks: “WaterHells”, “Drown
Symphony “, “Into The Underwhirls”, “Blue Thrones”
(instrumental) and “It’s A Fool’s World” (hellish track!).

KOTIPELTO
"WAITING FOR THE DAWN"
I always look at side-projects with suspicion, because most of the
times they are disappointing. I understand that some musicians want to express themselves in a in a different way, other than what they
do with their normal band, but sometimes this results to music "murders". The even stranger thing is when musicians produce a solo
album that its music is quite similar to what they do with their band! Well, this is the case with Timo Kotipelto's (Stratovarius'
vocalist) CD. But you have my word that despite the loss of originality, this
album kicks butts!!! The music is European power metal, but it is fresh,
innovative, with quite impressive ideas and less "symphonic" from Stratovarius' material. The songs hit straight to the target,
reminding a lot of Helloween's glory days. Two are the most important things here: first that although Timo plays a kind of music that
seems to have been satiated, the songs are not borring at all and you enjoy listening to them. Second the album must have been composed in
a really good mood, something that is evident in the songs that manage to carry you away with their strength and enthusiasm. I like
this album more than Stratovarius' last couple of works to be honest. Congrats
Timo.

KROKUS
"ROCK THE BLOCK"
When the
webmaster gave me the new Krokus CD for review, I almost jumped out of joy!! Ho-ho, Krokus is back with Storace on vocals - this is going to be fun!! As soon as I put the CD on the CD player and pushed play I thought: "This bastard, the webmaster, tricked me once again. He put AC/DC's "Powerage" in the new Krokus cover, and gave it to me for review!". I pressed the "next" button and I said to myself "Hey, wait a minute, this seems to come from the "Back in Black" album, so this must be an AC/DC compilation"...Then I understood, that this is indeed the new Krokus album, but simultaneously it is the most AC/DC album that Krokus have ever released!! And to be honest it seems to be the best AC/DC album that AC/DC never released in the past few years!!! Oh, yes, this is a very good album, full of hard rock. You know, only a few chords, nice vocal melodies, solid rhythm section, fast solos etc. For those who think that Krokus has nothing more to offer, or that it is just imitation music, I have nothing to say. For those who don't care much about these things and prefer to have a good time by the beach, with qualitative hard rock music which grooves you to the bone, I say "remember me too when you raise your cans"!!!! Cheers!

“BOOK OF THE DEAD”
(ProgRock Records)
This
is the debut album of the band, which in essence seems to be more of a side
project. The mastermind behind this release is bassist/keyboardist Ken
Jaquess (Atlantis), but the participants are really big names: Allan
Holdsworth on guitar, Roy Okumoto (Spock’s Beard) on keyboards and Doug
Sanborn on the drums! So, we have quite a gathering of talented progsters
here. The vocals are handled by Shaun Guerin, who sounds like a mixture of
Fish and Peter Gabriel. By the way, I can say that the whole approach here
reminds me of Marillion (the early period) and Genesis. Of course I don’t
mean that the band does a “copy-paste” work here. On the contrary the
prog rock adopted approach here is very fruitful, resulting to interesting
compositions. Furthermore, the violin played here by the classical virtuoso
Yvette Devereaux adds an impressive depth to the songs and makes the whole
attempt worthwhile. By the way Holdsworth ties the guitar into knots at
times, giving lessons of how the instrument should be played: with feeling
and substance! The album is a concept one, with five chapters/songs. Ancient
Egypt and Pharaohs are the contextual inspirations here, although the music
doesn’t have much to do with oriental listenings. Very good effort.
