Trucker Diablo

Hard rock music with strong doses of southern & blues rock is what this band from Northern Ireland offers. They may sound like a US band but that doesn’t mean they do not do well at what they do. Due to the band’s newest album “Song of Iron” we had a chat with the guitarist/vocalist Tom Harte about the band, rock music and many other interesting things. Do read below for more…

Hey Tom… You hit right on the spot with “Song of Iron”. It’s an excellent work indeed dude…

T: Cheers dude we are really pleased with it and with all the great feedback as well.

Almost 1 and a half year after your debut album, you hit the road with your second album. What changed all this time period? What are the similarities & the differences between those two albums?

T: Our first album “The Devil Rhythm” was recorded real quick and the songs were written within a few weeks. This time around we had more time to work on the songs and get them the way we wanted them. The songs still follow the same big riff, big chorus structure, only this time they are supercharged…

How more mature and wiser did you turn out to be the period you were touring before you started the recording of the new album and which (musical) direction did you want to go?

T: You defo learn a lot in my opinion. With being on the road and everything it happens it makes you a better musician all round. Musical direction we didn’t really think about, we just wanted to make great songs that we felt were really good and that we enjoyed to play.

Thus, what are the “Songs of Iron”?

T: Being from Northern Ireland, people have a nickname for our country which is Norn Iron lol. So there is a double meaning in the, we felt all the songs were strong and could stand the test of time and the Norn Iron thing, well it just fit lol….

Please give us a hint for each song

T: “Red Light On”: A song about self-control…

“Year of the Truck”: A song about being the best band you can be…

“The Rebel”: A twisted love story…

“Drive”: Never get taken for granted, do what’s best for yourself…

“Not So Superstar”: A song about rock stars not given fans respect…

“The Streets Run Red”: A song about growing up in Northern Ireland…

“Lie to Me”: Don’t be taken for a fool…

“Maybe you’re The One”: A song about choosing love at the right time…

“Bulldozer”: Balls out song about letting no-one stand in your way…

“Rock Hallelujah”: A tribute to Ronnie James Dio…

“Highway Radio”: A song about living life to the full…

“When’s It Gonna Rain?”: A song about wishing you could play music everyday…

“Shame on You”: Don’t let anyone hold you back, it would be a shame…

“I Wanna Party With You”: A simple love story that rocks...

The CD contains 14 songs. Those who will get the digital album will only get 11. Is this a way to encourage people to get the real thing and favor those who do so?

T: Not at all, our vinyl only has 11 songs with a digital download of all songs… We couldn’t get 14 songs on the vinyl lol…

It’s kinda unusual for a hard rock band to release long running play albums. How did you come up with this decision?

T: We had so many songs for the album and it was hard decision to leave some off.  So we left on all the songs that we thought were great… It was really that simple, or not if the case maybe lol…

The album’s production is also incredibly dynamic and tight. Who did it and are you totally satisfied with the final outcome yourself?

T: Thanks, yes absolutely pleased with it. Our friend and producer Frankie McClay did in at Einstein studios in Antrim, Northern Ireland.

What are the things you wanna achieve long-term as a band?

T: We just wanna do this full time and be the best band we can be. Tour the world and share the Trucker Love.

The video for “Drive” is already online. Are you planning to release another video anytime soon? If yes, for which song?

T: Yes we are planning to release another, we dunno which yet. We like to see which songs the fans like and go from there. But it will be soon.

What are the band’s touring plans so far? Any live appearances on table?

T: Yeah real busy, we are in Europe 3 times this year playing and will be in the UK doing some tour dates. Next year there are talks of us hitting the states and Australia, so we will see how that goes.

You may come from Ireland but I was quite sure that Trucker Diablo was a US band when I came across your music. What are those influences you have from the US and the European rock scene?

T: I’m just gonna list by name will make it easier…
Tom: Skynyrd, Creedence, Dio, Metallica…
Simon: Skynyrd, Metallica, Anthrax, Boston…
Glenn: Annihilator, Megadeth, Metallica, Black Country Communion…
Terry: Therapy?, Anthrax, Helmet, Pitchshifter…

People tend to add lots of music tags, especially in our time… so what’s the answer you give to those who ask you what kind of music your band plays?

T: Hard Classic Rock that can be heard in pubs or stadiums lol… (i.n.: Hell yeah!)

I’ve written: “…well, it’s not only how heavy or not you are but if your melodies are attractive as well …”. What’s your say?

T: Exactly it’s all about the big riffs and the big choruses for us… You need to play songs that everyone can sing…

How do you see all this “free download culture” of our time? Do fans/downloaders have the right to claim that if a band wants to make some bucks it must go on tour while it’s their “right” to download the albums for free? What must be done to get people to buy the actual product in the end?

T: I think that people download it’s up to them, but no matter how you spin it’s still stealing. My thoughts are if they download our album and like it chance are they may come to a show at some point so they are still supporting the band. But I think things will change.

It’s time for the Weird Questions now!!! How did you come up with the name Trucker Diablo… whose idea was it back in the day?

T: Trucker Diablo is a trucker handle, so the trucker is called Diablo. The name represents the band well as we want to hit the road, raise hell and make some friends along the way. It’s a huge road, but we are in it for the long haul.

What are those things that you do not like in the music industry nowadays?

T: There is not as much financial support for bands. There are probably bands out there that are the next Metallica, but they maybe never get the push they need.

Which is the record you wish you had written and why?

T: Brother by Cry of Love, such a great band and record… The singer only made one album with them and it’s a gem… A big inspirational for me…

What is missing from today’s music industry? Are most albums missing the quality they used to have back in the 70s and 80s?

T: I don’t think so they are some great quality bands and music, but no one out there to take a risk on those bands to make them stars…

If music were banned by law (CDs, Vinyl, cassettes, Mp3s everything), which 3 albums would you risk to hide even if it would be a risky thing to do cuz the penalty would be jail?

T: Cry of Love – Brother
Thin Lizzy – Live and Dangerous
Metallica – Master of Puppets

Name 3 top hard rock/metal releases that influenced the whole genre…

T: Kill Em All by Metallica, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath & Ten by Pearl Jam…

What are your 3 beloved songs of all time regardless of any music genre?

T: Dio – Holy Diver, Temple of The Dog – Hungerstrike & Metallica – Master of Puppets

Which is that band that has influenced most of the bands & musicians since rock music begun…?

T: Probably Black Sabbath kick it all off I reckon, for metal anyway…

You need to make a romantic atmosphere so as to seduce a lady. Which 3 songs would you choose to play in a row as soon as she comes in and why?

T: Bon Jovi – Always… Thunder – Love Walked In and Live – Lightning Crashes

Why is rock (any kind) music better than sex… if it is…

T: I think it’s a great accompaniment to sex, You can use it for fast or slow sex lol… (i.n.: hehehe…)

You have the opportunity to have sex with the porn-star/movie celebrity of your choice. Who would it be & why?

T: I will keep that to myself for now… (i.n.: OK, that’s fair enough…)

Imagine that your girlfriend/wife is selling your whole album-collection just to buy an expensive ring for herself. How would you react?

T: I don’t think so (lol), I would find another way to get the ring…

Thx for everything Tom. Close this interview in your own words.... Thx for the music! Take care dude!

T: Thanks for taking the time guys and we hope to see you and enjoy a beer with you out on the road… Rock on!!!!
