Ashes Of Ares are here with a new studio album 5 years after their debut release and under a new label as well. Drummer Van Williams (Ghost Ship Octavius, ex-Nevermore) is not a member of the band anymore, although he did play on the album as a guest this time. Moreover, keyboardist Jonah Weingarten (Pyramaze, Teramaze, Echoterra) composed the atmospheric intro on the track “Consuming the Mana”.

The duo, which consist of Matt Barlow (ex-Iced Earth) on vocals and Freddie Vidales (ex-Iced Earth, ex-Infusion) on guitars and bass, picks up form where they left off on their debut album. “Well of Souls” is a more cohesive and solid release than the debut. The guys focused more on what they can do better and they deliver their heavy metal music with power and passion. The production is heavy and tight as well. The album was recorded and mixed by Rob Oesterlin, mastered by Jacques Wait and produced by the duo and Rob Oesterlin.

“Well of Souls” will bring on your mind the Barlow-era Iced Earth at times and that’s absolutely natural. Matt has his own style of singing and he can’t (and won’t) change that, as he told me (read more here). Iced Earth released their best albums with Matt on their ranks, so it’s more than flattering to say that this album will remind you of that period. Matt is still one of the best vocalists in metal music and his performances on this album are amazing as always. The cover for Chris Cornell’s track “You Know My Name” (Casino Royale Soundtrack) is wonderful too. Overall, Ashes Of Ares state that are here to stay with “Well of Souls” and they are determined to go all the way and keep their fans content…
