Dumb ways against Piracy...

Grande Rock logoIt’s been quite a while since I wrote down some things about the music business and the way things work these days. Hence, the new trend has to do with the digital promos… but hey that ain’t new at all. Sure it ain’t! But I’m talking about the streaming promos! Hooray!!! Things are even easier now! All you’ve gotta do is stream the album so as to have an idea of what is all about! Isn’t it great?!! Revolutionary?!!! Or what?!!!

Let’s think things over for a while. You are a label (big, medium or small) and you have spent a few thousands (more or less) to record, produce, mix, master the album, then to release it in CD, vinyl format, you have printed cover artworks, booklets etc. and after all these things… you decide give the press a link to stream the album so as to write down the first impressions of it!!! If this ain’t called “paranoia” then how is it called!? Some bands, artists, promoters or managers send away MP3s in 128 (is this bitrate still on?!!!) & 192 kbps!!! Guys better send the sound of a garbage truck instead of compressing the songs so much in our time!! Do they know that they are “killing” their own music?! Are they aware that the tracks do not sound the way they were meant to sound in the first place? The same goes for streaming especially where the result is even “affected” by the internet stability and speed.

And why do they do so? Cuz they afraid that their album will be leaked all over the web! And that’s the way they’ve found to stop it(?) or restrict it?!! What a brilliant idea! It works too! The album is usually leaked a week or so before its release date or right after. They have saved the day! If it was leaked earlier fewer people would buy it… that’s why the sales in the music industry are massive these days!

I’m really looking forward to see the next step of the “brilliant music industry minds”. Let me make it easier for them. How about offering snippets of 1 minute from each track? I think your “paid” reviewers can do their job easily and faster that way. After all they hardly listen to any of the album they are paid to review. All the albums are getting high ratings so I do not see where the problem in that is! The independent bands & artists may have a minor problem but there are many ways to solve it. This is a “fine” way to fight “piracy”… but you really do not know who is “leaking” all the music before the official release dates right?! I believe you – I think thousands of other people do the same thing too. You know what you do… you know everything after all!!!

Music business ain’t dead… it’s like a “zombie”… it keeps on going no matter what, eating the flesh and drinking the blood of every music lover it finds in its way… that’s what music lovers are here for in the very end…

PS: I do not get how some bands/artists are publishing some “review links” on their FB pages and websites from a few blogs that offer their albums for free downloading! It’s obvious that they do not have a clue… but giving their album for free through their sites is hilarious! They are against piracy and due to some “kind words” they can give it for free without having a clue of what’s going on!!! Guys check your links better next time!

PS3: And 2016 keeps on its game… suddenly Pop Star Prince passed away! Prince was a gifted multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, producer & actor, among other things. He influenced fashion in his own way and he was a beloved person in the music business. His music will live on forever. Rest In Peace Prince…
