This DVD, as the double live CD, qas filmed/recorded at the Music Hall in St. Petersburg , Russia , which is a very known place to the mastermind of the band Andre. In truth to be told, I haven’t followed the band after D.C. Copper’s departure some years ago but from time to time I was trying to hear to the new stuff of the band, when I had the chance to do so… I’m not a die-hard fan anymore.

This DVD gave me the chance to go all over the band and brought me memories from the very first days that I “discovered” them back in the mid-90s. The fact that I haven’t seen the band live on stage all these years, made me wanna see the DVD more eagerly… even though I prefer the previous line-up of the band better.

So be it… this live show is excellent. The guys from the band have given some very good performances that night… even if I would expect from the crowd to be a little more enthusiastic. You know when bands like Royal Hunt play live on the stage you already know that the song quality isn’t gonna be the one that you listen to their CDs ‘cause they have very complex orchestrations on their songs… and they would need at least 15 musicians to play the songs properly as they do on the studio. The DVD sound is very good and the vocals (lead and back vox) were, surely, re-worked on the studio from the beginning and that is something that you can easily understand, if you pay attention to John West. I do not mind that… I have already stated that I prefer a perfect sound on CDs and DVDs and that’s why I mostly prefer the studio works of all the bands. No, this isn’t a truly live recorded show (john cannot sing the parts of D.C. so good that’s more than obvious) but why should I be annoyed by that? I do not think that anyone has tried to fool me… they only want to give me a better sound… if you do not like that then go out and buy a bottled CD or DVD of the band… where you will hear nothing at all. Personally I like it… the film quality is good, the sound quality is even better and what more should I ask from Royal Hunt? Maybe some video-clips?... hmm… next time… till then enjoy this live DVD… still wondering why they never filmed a concert with D.C. Cooper and Steen Mogensen…

This was surely a night to remember. The TNT concert took place on April 1, 2006 in Madrid ( Spain )… and it was the second to last concert with mr. Tony Harnell on the vocals. He even didn’t know that this was going to be the last live show that he was giving with TNT as well! Well, my first comment has to do with the cameras… the director has done a very good work and the video quality works very well here… not very often rock bands do such a good work when it comes to vision.

On the musical part now… I have heard many negative comments about the sound quality of this DVD but I must tell you that I do not agree totally with those negative comments. Personally as I have told many times in the past I do not like to watch live DVD/Videos and to listen to live albums… because I wanna hear a perfect sound when it comes to music. I also have to tell you that I was kind of “afraid” to play this DVD but I did it ‘cause it was Tony’s last performance with the band… and what I “discovered”?! This DVD works perfectly for me! It shows a great live show that was filmed in Spain and on the other hand it has a great sound! Yes, I know that there are many overdubs herem (especially the backing vocals must have been re-recorded only from Tony again in the studio)… even the whole audio part was re-worked or re-recorded but what’s wrong with that? If I want a live sound I will go and watch the band playing in a bar or a Festival… when I take a DVD and sit on my home drinking beers and watching some of my favorites bands I want to have a super sound quality and “live In Madrid” offers that to me.

The setlist is good but my rating will be lower ‘cause I miss some of my all time favorite TNT songs here… and the Bonus features do not have some official video clips of the band. Those who saw Tony performing with the band for the last time were very lucky and know exactly what happened and what did they felt that night… others 9like myself and you) who have bought or will buy this DVD must also feel very lucky because they will feel just like they have are listening to a Best Of TNT with great sound & vision!

I didn’t know that Fair Warning had filmed the live show that they had given at Club Cita in Kawasaki , Japan on April 18, 1993 . I only had the live album from that show, although I knew that the show was released on VHS on the Japanese market in 1993… but this is the first time that all the fans will have the chance to see the live show that the band gave on 1993 in Japan on DVD… and in truth to be told, this was the band’s best period!

The tracklist of the DVD as you can see on your left, is based on the band’s debut album and athta’st why I was thrilled by this DVD because I sonsider Fair Warning’s first album the best that they have ever recorded and one of the best European melodic hard rock albums… you can check that on the site’s Hall Of Fame section. Anyway, the band was perfect at that time period… they had released an outstanding album and Japanese people always knew how to support good rockin’ music… do not forget that it was Japan that kept many hard rock bands alive in the period 1993-2000, when the European and the Americans were stuck on shity wannabe good rock music… grunge!

Back on the DVD… the show on Japan is incredible, the tracklist is ideal, the band’s performances are excellent and I do not think that there are any overdubs on the DVD sound (at least not too many); it seems that the most of the show was truly recorded live and the band after all is very good on stage.

The DVD was digitally remastered and the sound is very good although there is no Dolby Surround 5.1 available in the audio set up… and I also didn’t really like the vision from the long distance cameras some times. The DVD also offers 5 bonus tracks and it’s hard to resist on this excellent package. The acoustic version of “The Call Of The Heart” will touch your soul. If you are a Fair Warning fans then I’m sure that you already have it… if you are a rock fans that loves late 80s/early90s rockin’ music then I would recommend you to get this DVD right away.

IQ

“IQ20 - THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY SHOW”

(Giant Electric Pea)

This is a great double DVD!!! One of the most important, but largely underestimated modern prog rock bands gives us the opportunity to see it playing live (which is a great opportunity, since the band does not tour excessively). The show recorded took place in London 2001and is an aniversary show (as the title indicates) for the 20 years of the band. However it is released now, with the opportunity of the successful latest work “Dark Matter”. The one disc contains the live show, where the tracklisting is very good indeed. The performance of the band and the sound are great, while we see singer Peter Nicholls with his make up, which reminds of course a lot of Peter Gabriel and his early performances. The second disc contains the Encores of the show (with the marvelous performance on the anthem “Subterranea”), outtakes from tour life and many other surprises. On the package one can read the history of the group, and in general I think that one will spend a good few hours navigating these two DVDs. The band must have put a lot of effort in this double DVD, which is he perfect gift for the IQ fans. However, I think that it might also work as a first contact with the group for those who still ignore this huge band.

TALISMAN
“WORLD'S BEST KEPT SECRET”
(Frontiers)

Talisman is one of the best bands that are coming from Sweden. They have delivered some excellent albums during their 15 year carrier and they still keep us good hard rockn’ company. The truth is that I was longing to see this double DVD ‘cause some very good musicians are playing in this band. “The idea of this DVD got started by a simple request from Luk De Roover the Lokerse Feesten promoter, to come do a concert at the festival, where the added incentive was we would receive a beta of the show. Along the way to Lokeren things got added to the big plan - other shows, old videos, bits and pieces from the past and present - making it a sort of documentary in brief of the 15 years or so the band has existed”... says bass player Marcel Jacob.

DVD number 1 contains two live shows of the band. The first is at club Mondo in Stockholm in August 2003 and the other in Sweden Rock festival in June 2003. The band’s playing really good on both live shows and in this live shows Jeff’s guitarist, Howie Simon, is also participating giving a more heavy sound on the band’s songs. As I have stated in the past live albums and live DVDs are not my forte and I get easily bored but I like this one although I prefer most the second DVD and you will understand why if you read the lines below. The bonus features for DVD 1 are: Multi-angle Concert Videos: Mysterious; If You Would Only Be My Friend; Outta My Way and lyric subtitles for Club Mondo concert.

DVD number two contains: Retrospect – The Movie – including:

I’ll Be Waiting (Video); Just Between Us (Video); Mysterious (Video); Time After Time (Live In Japan, 1993); Comin’ Home (Live In Japan, 1993); All Or Nothing (Live In Japan, 1993); Color My Xtc (Video); Here 2day, Gone 2day (Live At Sweden Rock Festival, 2001); Body (Live At Sweden Rock Festival, 2001); Fabricated War (Live At Lokerse Feesten, 2003); Tears In The Sky (Live At Lokerse Feesten, 2003); Crazy (Live At Lokerse Feesten, 2003); Skin On Skin (Video); Outta My Way (Live At Lokerse Feesten, 2003); In Make Believe (Video). The Bonus Features of DVD 2 are: Discography; Shred Video; Naked Bassplayer; DVD credits (featuring “Eating My BLT 2004”). The four videos of the band are excellent and especially the two first videos “forced” me to listen to their debut album again which is rather fantastic and I haven’t listened to it for ages! I must also refer to the bonus material of “Naked Bassplayer” where Marcel Jacob is giving instructions of how the bass should be played to all the new and the old bassists. It is a really interesting video even for those who do not play the bass. After all Marcel is a great bass player!

I totally believe that this double DVD is a must for all the fans of the band, especially if they haven’t seem them on stage like myself. I really enjoyed watching “Retrospect – The Movie” which contains many backstage funny moments as well. Now the next step is to see the band on stage... till then this double DVD will keep me good company.

SLAYER

“WAR AT THE WARFIELD”

(American Records)

Slayer is a band that has a many classic songs through the 20 years of their existence and has the reputation as one of the best live bands ever! Everyone who hasn’t been in a live show of Slayer can only imagine how hellish and dynamic the band is on stage. This DVD, which is the first for Slayer, gives you the opportunity to see a typical live show of the band and many more stuff. The live show, which is filmed here, took place at The Warfield Auditorium on December 7 in 2001. The DVD contains 19 live tracks, the video for the “Bloodline” song, a photo gallery and finally a documentary, which emphasizes to the fans of Slayer. The live show is very good and Slayer are as always excellent on stage apart from the vocals of Tom Araya, which in most times are worst than you can expect or you can listen to the studio albums… The sound and the picture are very good and the lucky guys who have a 5.1 sound system will surly enjoy this DVD more, as it supports this function. The band has a great sound, many cameras follow them on stage, the lights create a paranoiac atmosphere and the audience is acting like maniacs! Let’s go now to the part that the fans of the band are talking about Slayer and what Slayer themselves believe and think about them. You will be able to listen to how Slayer have affected their lives and also see who “crazy” they have gone by listening to the band. This section includes some shocking statements, but they were cut in the montage something that disappointed me, because I thought that one of the more extreme bands wouldn’t have to censor its fans… The next part I liked much is that apart from the original video for the “ Bloodline” video you can see how it was filmed and I believe it is a good experience to watch this. Anyway, this is a very good DVD, if you want to meet Slayer on stage (without Dave Lombardo) and it is a must have for the fans of the band. Enjoy it!

THE LIZARDS
“LIVE AT B.B. KING - NY”
(Hyperspace)

The Lizards is a very good band that has build up a very good reputation especially when it comes to their live appearances. So, this is the first DVD of the band and it was recorded in September of 2003 at B.B. King blues club and Grill in New York. Those who like 70’s hard rock music, small clubs and a rockin’ atmosphere, then will enjoy for sure this release. I like this band, I wish I had seen them live cause they are really good rockin’ players… and this kind of music is best to be played in small clubs like the B.B. King blues club. The band seems that is enjoying playing on the stage and among the songs of the live show you can see all the members of the band making comments about the band and talking about rock music in general. A really enjoyable DVD, that will surely please the fans of the band. For me, the best and the most enjoyable part of this DVD, is the excellent playing of the bass player of the band Randy Pratt. This guy is just a terrific pure rocker bassist! The sound of the DVD is very good and the band plays with a lot of passion as usual. I didn’t like so much the lighting of the club but that’s no big deal in the end. Also I waited from the crowd to be more alive but the good thing is that band is too good on the stage. If it happens to play somewhere near you then visit them in order to enjoy good music along with cold beers. The Lizards are alive… and are not joking at all!

OPETH
“LAMENTATIONS”

(Music For Nations)

A DVD captures a live concert of a band in sound and vision. Those who have seen Opeth play know that the visual part of the show is not something impressive and that the light show is simple. This band is concentrating on the music. They want to play their stuff, get in the groove, bang their heads (because they feel like to) and satisfy their respected audience. Simple clothes, lots of smiles and very low profile. These are the very first things you notice when you start the disc and some of the reasons why Opeth has been my favorite band since 1999 so I can’t wait to let them make me proud for that once more. Without having seen any “Damnation” material live yet I’m curious of what I will hear. The first set (“Damnation” + “Harvest”) starts with Mike being a little nervous but the band performing excellent. After an exactly-as-in-the-album-but-a-little-bit-slower “Death Whispered A Lullaby” they play “Closure”. Here we come to the part were Opeth go beyond themselves and get free of every kind of stress leaving every one speechless. They finish the mellow set on this level, every song is another adventure the sound is perfect and the crowd gets more devoted. The heavy set starts with “Master’s Apprentices” and can you believe it, they’re better! Obviously they are a little bit more familiar with that kind of playing, they move more and Mike proves why he is the best brutal vocalist. Even his clean vocals come out more easily now. The crowd is going insane and so on go the songs. “The Drapery Falls”, “Deliverance” (the end of the world!), “The Leper Affinity” and for the end the doom itself with “A Fair Judgment”. I have to be honest to them (as they are to me) and mention my disappointment for not even one “Still Life” track, but that’s it. I am pushing myself to be strict but their performance is laughing at me (he-he). The show ends and you’re wishing you were there. But since that can’t happen, you play it again and again and again and again.

MANOWAR
“HELL ON EARTH III”
(SPV)

Manowar have finally released their new long-waited double DVD, titled “Hell On Earth III”. The first DVD includes the festivals and the headline shows that Manowar have “blown” the last years. As you can see from the chapters, Manowar have visited most of the countries that their fans were thirsty for their live show. In these countries they have recorded the most representative moments from the live shows and in some of the chapters you can find tracks that are not cut and played by them from the beginning to the end. Some of these tracks are: “Manowar”, “Fighting The World”, “Hail And Kill”, “The Gates Of Valhalla”, “Nessun Dorma” (the first live presentation of this track) and some more. The bonus material on the first DVD includes some more songs played live, on the stages around the world, the life-style and the idea that Manowar represent. So, you will see many half or totally naked girls on stage and off stage next to Manowar, a lot of drinks, many Harleys and the dialogues that Joe DeMaio use to have with his friends-audience. The second DVD includes the live appearance of Manowar in Germany (Ringfest). Here you can find more songs played live (you can see the setlist from the chapters) and less talking of Joe with the audience and the girls on stage… After the end of the show follows all the video-clips that Manowar have made through the years for their fans. The bonus material in the second DVD is as enormous as it is in the first one, and here you can find the making of some of the video-clips with lots of interesting and unknown details and a documentary about their live appearance in Germany (very interesting). Generally, in this double DVD, Manowar give their best performance and give the opportunity to the fans to understand them better and realize the values and the ideas they represent. All the chapters have excellent sound and image and the whole duration gets over the five hours!!! Finally, you will find some surprises, which I didn’t mention and on purpose, you will see the crazy fans that Manowar have all over the world and you will feel the power and the feeling of true metal music. I have to admit that although I love this group very strong, after seeing many times this DVD I feel that I have many things to discover about them in the future and I was reassured, for one more time, that Manowar will never let their friends down! Hail to the Kings Of Metal and hail to this must-have release!
