Surprise Of December 2005

Many
sequels one could moan... Ok, I would answer as long as these are as
good as “Keeper-The Legacy”! No, don’t make a mistake and wear
your journey-to-the-past suit, because Helloween here tried to re-invent
euro-power metal (although I think that they did some years ago with
“The Dark Ride” - which they have dismissed). In this case re-invent
means to blow a fresh breath to the genre which seemed to be saturated.
And I think that Helloween accomplished this difficult task, as in
here they combine all the Helloween-trademarks (up-tempo songs) with
super modern production, lyrical atmosphere, contemporary heavy metal
elements and “dark” paths.
Weikath
seems to have found the best possible guitar partner to the face of
really tall Sascha Gerstner, delivering some excellent guitar riffs,
melodies and solos. Don’t get carried away by the “weird” single
“Mrs. God”, which is not representative of the album, which is
much heavier and straight. In here, you will find some real power
diamonds like “Born On Judgment Day” and “The Invisible Man”.
You will also find a cool ballad, some typical Helloween songs like
“Silent Rain”, “darker” songs like “The Shade In The Shadow”,
which carries the spirit of “Rabbit Don’t Come Easy”.
Nevertheless,
we should highlight two songs: first the genuine opus “The King For
1000 Years", the 14 minutes long song that opens the album and
has nothing to jealous from “Keeper” and “Halloween”. An
amazing song with variations, exceptional melodies and out bursting
riffs. Second the more “internal” and twisted part of the album,
the masterpiece “Occasion Avenue”, which in its 11 minutes of
duration travels you in time from the future to the past... choirs,
heavy riffing and the atmosphere of “The Dark Ride” is here to
haunt us forever.
Helloween
believe that this is their best album. I could never argue such a
thing - it would have been sacrilegious. What I can say for sure is
that every new album is better than the previous one. And I might be
tempted to say that this one stands proud next to the two glorious
masterpieces of the past. I don’ know what else could we ask for
from this band. They are the leaders and we are destined to follow
them. Pumpkin fly free!!!!!
